Just got back from working at the IU Media Relations office. Tom Crean had a presser today to discuss the off-season, player conditioning, recruiting, etc. Now, I’m not allowed to ask questions at his press conference but, if I could, I would have totally asked about Snoop Dogg repping IUBB in this music video.
The 2011-2012 Indiana Hoosiers basketball season came to an end on Friday with a loss to Kentucky in the Sweet Sixteen. As a senior, this season has been absolutely unforgettable. The team exceeded all expectations and provided Hoosier Nation with such unexpected highs as beating Kentucky, Ohio State, Michigan State, etc. and winning their first two games in the NCAA Tournament. I will never forget how Indiana basketball made my senior year absolutely amazing.
Watching Indiana basketball the last few years hasn’t always been easy but, when it’s all said and done, I am so fortunate to have been here to witness the dawn of this new era and, ultimately, the reemergence of the Hoosiers. I was right there as the team won 6, 10 and 12 games, respectively. And I was so fortunate to have witnessed this season, a season that proved to the nation that the Hoosiers are back and not going anywhere. Thank you IUBB.
Tonight’s game against Purdue will be my final game as a student and as a student assistant for the media relations department. It is bittersweet for so many reasons. Bitter because I have come to think of Assembly Hall as my second home and it breaks my heart that I will no longer be a member of “the greatest student section in the nation.”
But it’s also so sweet. I have been a witness to one of the greatest revivals in sports history. This program was left for dead when Kelvin Sampson was through with them. But, Coach Crean came and found players who genuinely understood what it meant to play with “Indiana” across their chest. It is sweet because after going through 6,10 and 12-win seasons, this team is on the cusp of winning their 24th game of the year. It is sweet because, although this is the final game of the year at Assembly Hall, IU is ensured of an opportunity to go dancing in the NCAA Tournament. It is sweet because I can tell people I was there, I stuck with the team and I never stopped believing we could reach this point again. Thank you to my fellow seniors, namely Verdell Jones, Tom Pritchard, Matt Roth, Daniel Moore and Kory Barnett for leading Indiana Basketball back.
“The winning finally came this year, but the most important elements came four years ago. You guys came: guys who cared, who worked hard, who did the right things, and who set the right examples.”
Six days later and Hoosier Nation is still buzzing about the win over Kentucky. It really was just so surreal to be there and be in the middle of all of that.
This picture is from Hoosier Hysteria, which took place Oct. 15. The Hoosiers face UIndy on Saturday for an exhibition game and officially tip off the season Nov. 11 against Stony Brook. Between the Colts, IU football and the NBA lockout it has been a tough couple months sports-wise, so I am unbelievably excited for IU basketball season. In my four years here, this season is easily the most-hyped. Go Hoosiers!
